    Athena WS-100

I just received my new 100`s from Audio Advisor for my home theater. I am using a high dollar Harmon Kardon receiver, and have enjoyed it for several years with JBL1000MV as my front L&R speakers, Cerwin Vega center and rears and a JBL sub. With an upgrade to a flatscreen, the monster JBL`s and CV center had to be moved to another room. The Athena`s look fantastic, I had never heard them, so this was a first for me to just buy a speaker on looks alone. So I hook them up and turn on the HK and pop in Cliffhanger dvd and start watching and listening. Impressive sound, very clear and spacious. I liked what I heard. Now, I have a 1976 Sansui Class "A" amp (63 watt X 2) that has been tucked away since the HK came into the picture, just no room for 2 systems, so I opted for home theater instead or stereo. The JBL`s spent some time hooked up to the beast, and sounded amazing, so I thought "lets see how the little Athena`s sound hooked up to a real stereo". As some listeners from yester-year know, amps today just do not put out the punch, all the low frequencies are sent to the sub channel due to the uprising of downsized speakers. So, Sansui fired up, Onkyo Cd Changer in place and Dire Straights "Brother in Arms" already loaded (I wondered where that went), I push play.  WOW !!!!  What I heard dropped me to the floor !!! These little, thin towers with lets face it, wanna be woofers are doing that ??? Absolutely unbelievable. Such tight, punchy, well defined bass, clear natural vocals & crystal clear highs. I am telling you, Dire Straights was in my living room. Nobody, and I mean nobody knows how good these sound until you hook then up to a real amp. I bet even Athena themselves would be impressed. With Class "A" power, you must be rather careful with the volume control or you will shoot speaker cones across the room, I am going easy on the Athena`s per the break in recomendations, they are a listening speaker, not floor shakers, I have the JBL`s for that. Even so, at a moderate listening level, they handle all that material just fine. So what did I do about the 2 system problem ? Thats easy, the HK and all its ratsnest of cables and fiber optics came down - Sansui in place with the DVD hooked up as 2 channel with the Athena`s flanking the flatscreen with 2 more little junkie KLH satelites hooked to my sub then connected to the "B" set of the Sansui for movie watching. HA !!!!!  Sounds better and clearer and more spacious than that HK ever did. Several of my fellow 5.1 friends have come over and want to upgrade their home theater as well. Now, is it just the HK that has been supressing sound all these years ? Nope, we tried a Denon, Yamaha and JVC 5.1 amps on the Athena`s, all with a unique sound of their own, but I am sorry, these little towers are capable of much more than todays digital era will give them. Next step ? Replace those junkie KLH rear speakers with Athena WS-15`s and be the new trend setter for 2 channel home theater. Thank you Athena, you are welcome anytime to come listen to what your little speakers can really do.      Tim J.
